Well, I must have been on good behaviour recently because I’ve been permitted to leave my home base to go and cover some shifts at neighbouring air bases and what an interesting time it’s been. And this is despite the fact that I have not done a single job at any of these other bases.

There are lots of good and bad things about working in the medical world (and how often it can seem that the bad outweigh the good) but one of the good things is the ability of medicine to teach you more about yourself and what you believe. I can’t think of many jobs about which that can be said. We had our first patient death on the job this week – I’ll tell you about it.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been of the opinion that, in most cases, there is a finite amount of resources available for healthcare, and that given this there is always going to be someone, somewhere, who is losing out for want of a treatment in the broadest sense of the word...
