Flying Doc

Flying Doc was born and educated in the UK and after leaving medical school headed for the nearest beaches in southwest England to commence advanced training in Anaesthetics or ‘how to put people to sleep, keep them that way for a while and then wake them up again’. Spurred on by the promise of even better beaches he moved to Western Australia and tried his hand at being an Emergency doctor for a while before being lured elsewhere in Australia by tales of flying suites and big yellow helicopters. He has been working as a flying doctor for many months now and despite everyone’s best efforts still has no career plan. He enjoys long walks on the beach, his favourite colour is blue and his favourite food is Cherry Ripes.

Another cup of tea doctor?

Well, I must have been on good behaviour recently because I’ve been permitted to leave my home base to go and cover some shifts at neighbouring air bases and what an interesting time it’s been. And this is despite the fact that I have not done a single job at any of these other bases.

Nothing like a good winch-job

Right then. As I alluded to in an earlier post, things have been pretty busy here recently, and as I think I mentioned a while back, I did my first ‘winch-job’ last week...

Holding out for a hero

What a week! Things have been varied, exciting and non-stop here recently – everything I hoped they would be when I started this job. The week started off innocuously enough, with a trip out to one of the islands to retrieve a middle-aged lady with chest pain and palpitations...

Death on the high seas

There are lots of good and bad things about working in the medical world (and how often it can seem that the bad outweigh the good) but one of the good things is the ability of medicine to teach you more about yourself and what you believe. I can’t think of many jobs about which that can be said. We had our first patient death on the job this week – I’ll tell you about it.

A costly practice

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been of the opinion that, in most cases, there is a finite amount of resources available for healthcare, and that given this there is always going to be someone, somewhere, who is losing out for want of a treatment in the broadest sense of the word...

On chocolate teapots

This week I have mostly been finding out how superfluous yours truly is to the whole shebang. If you have ever had any contact with the aeromedical retrieval world then you’ll know that the set up in terms of medical staff is by no means universal.

Who said life was fair?

Sometimes patients come out of left-field and just floor you. One of the most common misconceptions about being a flying doctor is that most of the work you do involves shimmying heroically down a line out of a hovering helicopter...
